Biography

Date of birth – March 2, 1952.

In 1973, Graduated from the Higher Political School of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR.

In 1981, Graduated from the Academy of Military and Political Affairs. In 2002, graduated from the Financial Academy of the Government of the Russian Federation.

He received the degree of Doctor of Legal Science, and became a professor. Military rank – General-Colonel.

From 1973 to 1990, he served in the Internal Forces of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

From 1990 to 1993, Deputy of the RSFSR, Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Russian Federation concerning defence and security.

Between 1993 and 1998, he served as First Deputy of the Minister of Security, Director of the Federal Counter-intelligence Service, Director of the Federal Security Service, Minister of Justice and Minister of Internal Affairs of Russia.

In 1999, he served as first Deputy to the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation – Minister of Internal Affairs, the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation.

After being elected as a member of the State Duma in December 1999, he led a commission in the struggle against corruption.

On April 19, 2000 the State Duma appointed S.V. Stepashin to the post of Chairman of the Accounts Chamber of the Russian Federation.

February 4, 2005, Sergei Vadimovich Stepashin was dismissed from the position by the State Duma, and then re-appointed Chairman of the Accounts Chamber by request of the President of the Russian Federation.

From 2002 to 2005, President of the European Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (EUROSAI).

From 2007, a member of the governing council of the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI).

On January 26, 2011, S.V. Stepashin was once again appointed Chairman of the Accounts Chamber for a third term by request of the President of the Russian Federation.

On January 9, 2014, appointed Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the State "Housing Reform Fund" Corporation.

He is a State Counsellor of Justice of the Russian Federation.

Decorated with the orders "For Merit to the Fatherland", 2nd and 3rd class, the "Order of Courage", the "St. Seraphim of Sarov" order, 1st and 2nd class, the French "Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur", the Swedish order "Kommendör av första klassen", the "For Distinction in Military Service" medal, 1st and 2nd class, the "For excellent service in the protection of public order" medal, and others.

Married, with one son.
